Meta bans Russian state media over 'foreign influence'

Tech giant Meta, the owner of Facebook, has announced that it is banning Russian state media outlets such as RT and Rossiya Segodnya from its platforms.

The company cited deceptive tactics used by these outlets to conduct covert influence operations online as the reason for the ban.

Meta confirmed the ban in a statement on Monday, stating it would apply globally across its platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, with enforcement rolling out in the coming days.

"After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets," a Meta spokesperson said in a written statement. "Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity."
