'One of the most naturally innovative drummers': ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard dies aged 77

Frank Beard, the drummer with American rock legends ZZ Top, has died at the age of 77.

The news was announced by the band, with their official website confirming that Beard died while receiving hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas. No cause of death has been shared.

ZZ Top founder Billy Gibbons has paid tribute to Beard, describing him as “one of the most naturally innovating drummers”.

“Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top."

He added that the band intends to continue performing in keeping with the drummer’s wishes.

Scheduled concerts in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs have been cancelled, but ZZ Top plan to play two shows at The Moody Theater in Austin this weekend, a venue they said was one of Beard’s favourites in "a city that had been something of a second home for him".

Born in Frankston, Texas in 1949, Beard began playing drums as a teenager, when he met his future bandmate Dusty Hill. They played together in various groups before Beard joined Gibbons in ZZ Top in 1969. Beard introduced Gibbons to Hill and the band’s classic line-up was formed.

The band became synonymous with a blend of rock and blues in the ’70s, and they found commercial success in 1984 with their ‘Eliminator’ album, which included the hit songs ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’, ‘Sharp Dressed Man’ and ‘Legs’.

Known for their impressive long beards, Beard became known as The Man With No Beard as he was – ironically – the only band member without lengthy facial hair.

ZZ Top have sold more than 50 million records across their career and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004.

The band's longtime bassist Dusty Hill died in July 2021, aged 72.

Beard is survived by his wife, Debbie Meredith, and three children.
