Lady Gaga: Trans community must be ‘protected’ from Donald Trump’s anti-trans laws

Lady Gaga has shared why she spoke up for the trans community during the Grammy Awards last month.
During her acceptance speech when she won the ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ for her collaboration with Bruno Mars on ‘Die With A Smile’, the pop superstar argued that transgender people are “not invisible” and that they “deserve love”.
Now, in a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Gaga said that what the community is facing is “very unfair” and that they must be “protected” from anti-trans laws like the ones US president Donald Trump is backing.
“What I would say first and foremost is what trans people are being faced with in this world is completely unfair, wrong, and there’s this violence that’s taking place on a daily basis in their lives,” she said, adding, “I think that we all need to support trans people and each other to know that they deserve to be supported and loved and protected and lifted up.”
Gaga, a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, acknowledged that every oppressed community is different: “What I go through in my life is very different from that, and what every community that is oppressed goes through is different, it’s all unique experience. And then there’s individual people, and everyone’s individual experience is different.”
She added that one of the greatest things she learned is to take time to understand people’s stories and backgrounds, which has made her a better ally to the trans community.
The singer’s seventh studio album, ‘Mayhem’, is released today. It follows from 2020’s ‘Chromitica’ and her Joker: Folie à Deux tie-in album ‘Harlequin’, which was released last year.
Next month, Gaga will headline Coachella and perform a free concert on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach in May.
Lady Gaga’s 'Mayhem' is released on 7 March.
