Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva opened COP30 on Monday, warning that climate change has already become a “tragedy of the present” and calling for a global effort to inflict “defeat on the deniers”. This year’s UN climate conference is taking place without the participation of the United States, whose President Donald Trump is a staunch supporter of the fossil fuel industry.
