The man accused of injuring dozens of Liverpool football fans in May by driving his car into them now faces a further 24 charges, prosecutors have said.

Appearing via video link from prison, Paul Doyle, 53, was informed about the development during a Liverpool Crown Court hearing on Friday.

Doyle, who was in tears during the call, has now been charged with 31 offences, up from seven originally.

All but one of the new charges were for assault against victims, one of whom was only 7 months old when the attack took place.

Fans had been processing through Liverpool city centre to mark the world-famous club's 20th domestic title at the time of the car ramming on 26 May.

At least four people, including a child, were freed from beneath the car when it came to a stop.

Dozens of the victims had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Although nearby roads were shut to traffic, the car is thought to have followed an ambulance through the roadblock.

Merseyside Police have not given a motive for that attack, but have said it was not believed to be terrorism-related.

Doyle is expected to enter pleas on 4 September.
