US President Trump to meet King Charles III and PM Starmer on state visit

Donald Trump is set to arrive in the UK Tuesday for his second state visit as US president, with King Charles III deploying the full pageantry of Windsor Castle in a diplomatic charm offensive aimed at securing favourable trade deals and US support for Ukraine.

The visit includes a state banquet, carriage procession, and Trump's inspection of the Guard of Honour. He will visit Queen Elizabeth II's grave, having met her during his 2019 visit.

The invitation was extended in February when Starmer presented a signed letter from Charles to Trump at the White House. Trump and First Lady Melania arrive Tuesday night and depart Thursday.

Washington and London are expected to announce agreements on technology and civil nuclear energy as Britain seeks stronger defence, security and energy ties with the US following a recent tariff deal.

Fifty-five drones will patrol Windsor Castle in one of Britain's largest security operations, comparable to the king's coronation. The enhanced security follows the recent killing of US conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.

Hundreds of military personnel will participate in ceremonies after months of rehearsals. The Trumps will view displays of US-British historical records and artwork.

"We're buttering up to him," said royal historian Robert Lacey. "He wouldn't come to Britain if he didn't have the chance to stay at Windsor Castle and meet the king."

The UK previously sought Trump's support during Brexit preparations, while this visit focuses on securing favourable trade terms and US backing for ending Russia's all-out war in Ukraine.

The formal ceremonies include a carriage ride through Windsor estate with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, escorted by military personnel. Officials from both governments will discuss bilateral cooperation during the visit.
