Russia has likely suffered more than 610,000 casualties in Ukraine, says UK MoD

Russia has likely seen more than 610,000 military personnel killed or wounded since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

According to the update, Russian military recruitment levels are also thought to have dropped off year-on-year.

The ministry cited Russian officials' claims in 2023 that they were recruiting troops at a rate of 1,600 daily and compared them with "publicly cited figures" that put the rate at around 1,000 daily — a number the UK says is also probably inflated.

International estimates of Russian casualties in Ukraine vary, but some outlets have published estimates as high as 1 million.

According to the latest estimate from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia has lost 635,880 troops since the start of the war, including more than 1,000 on 16 September alone. The figures have not yet been independently verified.
