The tallest church in the world: Barcelona’s Sagrada Família reaches new heights

Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia basilica has become the world’s tallest church after builders lifted a new section of its central tower.

The structure now stands at 162.91 meters, surpassing Germany’s Ulmer Münster.

Architects say the final height of 172.5 meters will honor Gaudí’s wish not to exceed the city’s Montjuic mountain — “the work of man should not surpass the work of God."

The basilica’s exterior is set to be completed in 2026.

Construction on the unfinished Sagrada Familia has sped up in recent decades as the basilica became a major international tourist attraction.
