Nick Reiner, the son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer, is in custody for the couple's murder, Los Angeles prison records show.

The LASD Inmate Information Centre says the 32-year-old has been charged with a felony level crime. He was arrested on Sunday evening and charged in the early hours of Monday morning.

Official records show he is being held in custody on $4 million (€3.4 million) bail.

Nick Reiner, the younger of Rob Reiner's two sons, spoke publicly of his struggles with addiction.

By 18, he had cycled in and out of nine treatment facilities with bouts of homelessness and relapses in between.

In a 2016 interview, Rob Reiner said, "I maybe didn’t handle it the best way. I listened to a lot of people who had a desk and a diploma. I didn't really think about my kid and what he needed."

Nick and Rob Reiner would collaborate on a semi-autobiographical 2016 film, "Being Charlie," that included elements of their relationship and experience.

Rob Reiner directed the movie and Nick Reiner was a co-writer.

"We didn't go into it thinking this is going to be therapeutic or bring us closer, but it did come out that way," Rob Reiner said.

"It forced us to understand ourselves better than we had. I told Nick while we were making it, I said, 'you know it doesn't matter, whatever happens to this thing, we won already. This has already been good.'"

Bodies found at home

Director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home in what police say is being investigated as an "apparent homicide."

A spokesperson for the Reiner family confirmed their deaths in a statement to media. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the family spokesperson said. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a medical aid request shortly after 3:30 pm and found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead inside. Reiner turned 78 in March.

A family member went to the house and discovered the bodies of two people, according to Los Angeles police. Homicide detectives were at the scene conducting an investigation, law enforcement officials said.

Investigators believe the Reiners suffered stab wounds and a family member is being questioned, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

Los Angeles authorities have not confirmed the identities of the people found dead at the residence in the upscale Brentwood neighbourhood on the city’s west side that’s home to many celebrities.

LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said in a press conference that official identification of the two people who were found dead would come from the LA County coroner at a later time, adding that the investigation will continue through the night.

Reiner was long one of the most prolific directors in Hollywood, and his work included some of the most memorable movies of the 1980s and 1990s, including This is Spinal Tap, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride.

His role as Meathead in the 1970s TV classic All in the Family alongside Carol O’Connor’s Archie Bunker catapulted him to fame and won him two Emmy Awards.

The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner married photographer Michele Singer Reiner in 1989. The two met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally.
