Indigenous Mayans in Guatemala celebrate new solar year with spiritual ceremony

Hundreds of Indigenous Mayans in Guatemala celebrated the new solar year with a spiritual ceremony at the sacred Kaminaljuyu site in Guatemala City. 18 February marks the beginning of a new cycle in the Chol Ab' Mayan calendar.

Spiritual guide Nelson Tuyuc emphasised the cleansing of energy through breathing to start the year anew. While various Indigenous communities use different calendars, the Chol Ab' is recognised as the primary calendar governing the Mayan year.
