Trump plans to block two Iberdrola wind farms off Massachusetts coast

US President Donald Trump plans to revoke contracts to build two large wind farms owned by Spain's Iberdrola off the coast of the northern state of Massachusetts, according to court documents filed on Wednesday.

The US Justice Department plans to revoke the federal licence granted by the Biden administration in 2024 to Avangrid, Iberdrola's US subsidiary, to build and operate the Avangrid New England 1 and 2 plants.

The plan calls for the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to revoke the licence by 10 October, in what would be a new step by the Trump Administration in its crusade against renewable energy.

Just four years ago, Iberdrola announced a major capital increase in its subsidiary Avangrid, which involved the issuance of a total of $4 billion (€3.429bn) in ordinary shares, with the aim of financing the growth of its US subsidiary.

Trump and his commitment to non-renewable energy

For years, Trump has maintained that the United States should focus on non-renewable energy due to the country's large oil reserves. And in recent times, he has begun to contemplate the possibility of building new nuclear power plants to supply technology companies in their race to develop artificial intelligence models.

In contrast, the president has always criticised the development of clean energy, especially wind energy, accusing the industry of killing thousands of birds due to the enormous blades of wind turbines.

However, this is an argument that is rejected by environmental associations, which see these projects as a much more environmentally friendly alternative to other energy sources, such as coal and oil.
