Facebook wants to help you get over ‘swipe fatigue’ with an AI dating tool

Meta wants to help you find love by bringing an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant to its dating feature on Facebook.

The company said this week it is “helping people avoid swipe fatigue” with two new features called dating assistant and Meet Cute.

Facebook Dating is a free dating service within the Facebook app. The company says it aims to make it “easier to find love by meeting and starting conversations with people who share your interests”.

For example, the new dating assistant could suggest users ask for matches who have similar interests – Meta suggested “find me a Brooklyn girl in tech” as one prompt – or a user could ask the AI to help with their own profile.

Meanwhile, the Meet Cute feature gives people an automatic weekly “surprise match” which is based on its algorithm.

AI features have already entered other dating apps. The technology company Match Group, which is behind Tinder and Hinge, has increased its investment in AI, with bots being used to help coach struggling users, help write messages, and help users pick which photos to use.

Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder of the dating app Bumble, suggested last year that in the future, personal AI “dating concierges” could go on dates with other AI agents to determine their users’ compatibility.
