Turkey's transport minister has been fined for speeding after he posted a video on social media of himself clocking 225 kilometres per hour on a highway — far exceeding the 140km/h limit.

Abdulkadir Uraloğlu shared a video on X on Sunday showing him driving along the Ankara–Nigde highway in an Audi near the Turkish capital, while listening to folk music and speeches by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The footage — which shows the minister's speedometer clocking speeds of between 190 and 225km/h — was accompanied by the hashtag #TurkeyAccelerates.

Hours later, Uraloğlu reposted the video along with a photo of a speeding ticket.

"I took the wheel to see the current situation of the motorway," he said in the follow-up post on X. "During this time, I unknowingly exceeded the speed limit for a short while."

"With the video, I effectively denounced myself," Uraloğlu admitted.

The penalty notice showed that Uraloğlu had been fined 9,267 lira (around €190) for driving at 225km/h.

"Adhering to speed limits is a mandatory requirement for everyone," Uraloğlu added in his post. "I hereby inform the public that I will be much more careful in future."

The reactions on social media ranged from mockery to disbelief.

"Dear minister, if you pay within 15 days, they offer a 25% discount," said one X user.
