Lisbon hit by 4.8 magnitude earthquake, no damage reported

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck Lisbon on Monday, the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) has reported.

The earthquake's epicentre was recorded around 14 kilometres from Seixal, in the district of Setúbal, and was felt in several places in Greater Lisbon.

The earthquake was recorded at 1:24 pm local time (2:24 pm CET), the IPMA said in a statement. According to the information available at this time, the tremor did not cause any personal or material damage.

The earthquake was felt at maximum intensity in the municipalities of Almada and Sesimbra.

Originally reported to have measured 4.7 Richters, its magnitude was later corrected to 4.8 by multiple seismological centres, including the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to USGS, the epicentre was recorded 3 kilometres from Charneca da Caparica, in the municipality of Almada. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center also reported the magnitude at 4.8.

There is no information on any follow-up tremors near the Portuguese capital. The Portuguese agency IPMA has stated that “if the situation warrants it, new announcements will be issued” in due course.
