For the first time in two decades, Athenians and people visiting the Greek capital now have a clear view of the Parthenon, free from scaffolding.

Supports erected for conservation work 20 years ago along the 5th century B.C temple's western façade have now been taken down, allowing an uncluttered view of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Iron structures inevitably hid certain details and altered the aesthetic experience on the Holy Rock.

The removal of the equipment, however, is temporary and is expected to last until November.

More modern, but more discreet, scaffolding will return as it is necessary to continue the maintenance and restoration works of the unique monument, which are expected to be completed in spring 2026.

The Acropolis is by far the most popular tourist attraction in Greece. About 4.5 million visitors visited it in 2024, according to ELSTAT.
