Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark has been crowned Miss Universe, the first Dane to ever win the title.

"I worked so hard. I worked so hard to reestablish a name and for me making history standing here today as the first ever woman from Denmark to win the Miss Universe title is history, and I know that both Denmark and Europe in general is going to be so proud," said Theilvig at a press conference after her win.

The 21-year-old animal protection advocate and diamond business professional beat out Miss Nigeria at the 73rd edition of the pageant in Mexico City, with Miss Mexico placing third.

Held at the 20,000-capacity Mexico City Arena, the event featured a mariachi performance and singer Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas performing “Mexicana."

Over 120 contestants participated, including debut entries from Belarus, Eritrea, Guinea, Macau, Maldives, Moldova, and Uzbekistan.
