Zalman Lazaroff, the uncle of injured American Chabad student Leibel Lazaroff, spoke on Monday night at a public Hanukkah menorah lighting in New York, giving an update on his nephew’s condition after the Bondi Beach attack.
Police tightened security as the ceremony went ahead under heavy guard. Officers surrounded the area, checking access points and monitoring the crowd.
The measures followed the mass shooting in Australia on Sunday that killed at least 15 people during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach. Jewish groups in the United States have since urged synagogues and community organisations to raise security at public gatherings, including stricter controls on entry.
