In Peru, the waves began on Friday and continued on Saturday, damaging many fishing boats and forcing the closure of several ports.

The authorities also ordered the precautionary closure of beaches and recreational areas.

The unusual swell is believed to be due to strong winds off the US coast; the waves are expected to subside by 1ᵉʳ January.
