Russian drone strike on Odesa injures four and causes power outages

Four people were injured in a Russian drone attack on the Black Sea port city of Odesa late on Monday in a strike that also caused power outages, authorities say.

“Four people were injured as a result of the Russian attack. … Doctors are providing everyone with the necessary assistance,” the city's governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram.

Three residents of private houses sustained shrapnel wounds and broken limbs. They were hospitalised in moderate condition.

Another person, who was in a business centre at the time of the attack, sustained a concussion.

Footage from Ukraine's emergency services showed firefighters trying to put out multiple blazes.

Kiper said the strike also damaged energy infrastructure, leading to no electricity in parts of the city.

Sumy, in the country's northeast, was also struck in the early hours of Tuesday, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service.

It said a strike sparked a fire at a children's health facility, but no injuries were reported.

The strikes come after US President Donald Trump on Monday announced Washington would be halting military assistance to Ukraine in a bid to pressure his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in negotiations to end Russia's war.

Speaking in his nightly video address on Monday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine, Europe, and the US must speed up diplomacy to ensure the war ends with a lasting peace.

He has argued that any peace deal should come with security guarantees to prevent Russia from invading Ukraine again.
