Acclaimed Albanian writer Kadare, who defected to France, dies aged 88

Acclaimed Albanian writer Ismail Kadare, who penned novels like "Broken April" and "The General of the Dead Army" to chronicle the fate of his country under the rule of communist dictator Enver Hoxha from 1944 until his death in 1985, died Monday of a heart attack aged 88 without ever winning the much coveted Nobel literature prize. Prior to his death, Kadare had been living in France since 1990.
