A long-lost painting by Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens, hidden for centuries, sold for €2.3 million at an auction in Versailles.

The artwork, found in a private Paris townhouse, depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and was long assumed to be from a Rubens workshop.

Scientific tests and expert analysis confirmed its authenticity, identifying pigments typical of the painter.

Although some elements may have been completed by others, specialists said the central figure is an original Rubens masterpiece.
